Day 5 Tuttle Creek State Park, Manchester, Kansas

The landscape changed entering into Kansas from vast swaths of cornfields to open grasslands with clusters of trees here and there.  It reminded me of Iceland except the trees here were of normal height. This area of Kansas is known as the Flint Hills because of the flint at the surface covering a large area.  It is considered a prairie grassland. We had been seeing this billboard for hundreds of miles advertising this large cheese shop that was suppose to have hundred varieties of cheese, so we needed a break and stopped. It ended up being a fairly small shop located at least right off the highway.  We did get a few different cheeses but they didn't sell crackers or bread in the store.  We got that later in a grocery store in Manchester.  We also restocked our water and quick meals. We arrived fairly early at our campground. It is located at the base of a reservoir.  We ended up changing our campsite to one under the trees.  We settled in and had the Air conditioner going full blast when there was a pop and the ac quit working.  Mind you at this point the temp was 105.  A moment of panic set in but Scott figured out we had blown the electric hook up. We moved to the next site over and got the ac up and running.  We took Virgil out for a walk to get a look at things.  Not far into the walk he just stopped and lay down.  We got him back to the camper and set up under the ac with water bottles on his belly.  It took him quite a while to get cooled down.  Meanwhile Scott rode his bike to the office to let them know we had switched sites and why and it turns out we were in the spot we were suppose to be in.  She had given us the wrong one to start.  By this time the thermometer read 107!  Scott took his turn under the ac vent.  It is scary hot out.

I sure wish it was cooler out so that we could explore more.  Where we are in the campground is filled with beautiful large sycamore trees.  I would like to explore the reservoir too. There are very few campers here.
